Katarina Tič is a junior researcher at the Milko Kos Historical Institute ZRC SAZU. Her research focuses primarily on the period spanning the second half of the 19th century to the early 20th century, with an emphasis on the study of nationalisms through the lens of sensory history. She holds a master's degree in History and Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana. Her master's thesis explored the sonic dimensions of the Slovenian “tabori” rallies (1868–1871). She is currently pursuing doctoral studies in the Cultural History and Memory Studies module within the Comparative Study of Ideas and Cultures program at the Postgraduate School ZRC SAZU.


In her research, Katarina Tič pays particular attention to social and political history, the history of everyday life, borderland studies, and the formation of collective identities.

In the context of her doctoral dissertation, she examines the sensory history of nationalisms from the beginning of the Habsburg Monarchy's constitutional era to its dissolution (1861–1918). She focuses on a comparison of the linguistically, culturally, and nationally heterogeneous border regions of historical Gorizia and Styria, where national affiliations were not self-evident but were instead shaped through everyday interactions, negotiations, and conflicts.

She examines nationalisms through the interdisciplinary methodological lens of sensory history. Her work is grounded in the premise that nationalism cannot be adequately understood solely as a political or ideological phenomenon, but also as an everyday, experiential, and bodily practice. She explores how tastes, smells, sounds, images, and bodily sensations generated meanings, intensified emotions, shaped senses of belonging, and contributed to the establishment and demarcation of national communities.
