BeWoP - Beyond Walk of Peace: from Crossborder Historical Research and Cultural Heritage to European Trail and Stories

BeWoP project addresses the common challenge for developing an integrated cultural tourism offer in the programme area, also in the perspective of an overall increase of tourism fostered by GO! 2025 in rural and peri-urban areas.

The general objective of the project is to increase tourist flows, thanks to the creation of an integrated tourist area in the cross-border sites of the First World War, focusing on sustainable and conscious cultural tourism, which results in the optimization of the physical space in three pilot crossborder sites and the dissemination of greater knowledge regarding the history and the environment of this territory, while promoting homogeneous and coherent cross-border economic development. The BeWoP project builds on the results of the WALKofPEACE project, awarded as the best Interreg project in 2020. In this regard, the BeWoP project sets an even more ambitious objective of strengthening the tourism product through strategic level actions to make it a lever for the development of the border area. Thus the project plans to intervene with a strongly cross-border approach to obtain the following results (i) improve accessibility to the tangible and intangible heritage of the Great War in the three pilot sites, (ii) promote the inclusion of the cross-border Walk of Peace among the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, (iii) strengthen the integrated cross-border tourism promotion strategy with attention to sustainability, (iv) strengthen historical research and knowledge, organising cross-border cultural events that improve the dissemination of knowledge of the war events that have scarred this territory among the public, while promoting mutual understanding and the transformation of a divisive and tragic event like the First World War into an opportunity for dialogue, sharing and reflection on the future of Europe as a whole.

The ZRC SAZU will lead and coordinate the research phase, which will focus on an in-depth scientific analysis of the historical features and key events that characterised the three selected points of interest. Important part of this work package will be the systematisation and collation of the results of the research already carried out and the preparation of an archive that will bring together the results of the various existing historical and naturalistic analyses. A reference list will be publicly accessible and useful to the European and international scientific community. The research results will first be presented in the form of a newsletter and then archived in a database. They will also contribute to the development of an action plan for tourism development and a strategy for the certification of the Routes of Peace as a cultural route by the Council of Europe, the updating of the Routes of Peace guide, the organisation of dissemination events and the improvement of the mobile application. ZRC SAZU will also play an important role in the coordination of the cross-border history and tourism programme èStoriabus, in the selection and equilibration of Slovenian and Italian speakers, and in the transfer of the international history festival èStoria to Slovenian territory.

Obiettivo generale del progetto è incrementare i flussi turistici, grazie alla realizzazione di un'area turistica integrata nei siti transfrontalieri della Prima guerra mondiale, puntando su un turismo culturale sostenibile e consapevole, che abbia come conseguenza l’ottimizzazione dello spazio fisico in tre siti transfrontalieri pilota e la diffusione di maggiori conoscenze della storia e dell'ambiente del territorio, favorendo uno sviluppo economico transfrontaliero omogeneo e coerente. Il progetto BeWoP muove dai risultati del progetto WALKofPEACE, premiato come miglior progetto Interreg nel 2020. Il progetto BeWoP si pone l’obiettivo ancor più ambizioso di potenziare il prodotto turistico legato alla Grande Guerra attraverso azioni di livello strategico come leva di sviluppo del territorio di confine. In tale ottica il progetto prevede di intervenire con un approccio fortemente transfrontaliero per ottenere i seguenti risultati (i) migliorare l’accessibilità al patrimonio tangibile e intangibile della Grande Guerra nei tre siti pilota, (ii) promuovere l'inclusione della Walk of Peace transfrontaliera tra  li Itinerari Culturali del Consiglio d'Europa, (iii) rafforzare la strategia di promozione turistica transfrontaliera integrata con attenzione alla sostenibilità, (iv) rafforzare la ricerca storica e la conoscenza, promuovendo eventi culturali transfrontalieri che aiutino la diffusione della conoscenza degli eventi bellici che hanno sconvolto questo territorio tra il pubblico, promuovendo al contempo la comprensione reciproca ed la trasformazione di un evento divisivo e tragico come la Prima guerra mondiale in un’occasione di dialogo, condivisione e riflessione sul futuro dell’Europa nel suo complesso.

I collaboratori del ZRC SAZU guideranno e coordineranno la fase di ricerca, che si concentrerà su un'analisi scientifica approfondita delle caratteristiche storiche e degli eventi chiave che hanno caratterizzato i tre punti di interesse selezionati. Inoltre, lavoreranno alla sistematizzazione e alla raccolta dei risultati delle ricerche già effettuate e alla preparazione di un archivio che riunirà i risultati delle varie analisi storiche e naturalistiche esistenti. Verrà compilato un elenco di riferimento che sarà pubblicamente accessibile e utile alla comunità scientifica europea e internazionale. I risultati della ricerca saranno prima presentati sotto forma di newsletter e poi archiviati in un database. Inoltre, contribuiranno allo sviluppo di un piano d'azione per lo sviluppo del turismo e di una strategia per la certificazione delle Rotte della Pace come itinerario culturale da parte del Consiglio d'Europa, all'aggiornamento della guida delle Rotte della Pace, all'organizzazione di eventi di divulgazione e al miglioramento dell'applicazione mobile. La ZRC SAZU svolgerà inoltre un ruolo importante nel coordinamento dei programmi transfrontalieri di storia e turismo èStoriabus, nella selezione e nel bilanciamento dei relatori sloveni e italiani e nel trasferimento del festival internazionale di storia èStoria in territorio sloveno.
