Hungarians and Slovenes lived together in a common state, the Habsburg Empire, for many centuries and were neighbours from 1918. The developments of the two nations were connected to each other with many ties, not to mention the facts that a Slovene national minority group lives in the framework of the Hungarian state, while after 1918 Hungarians lived in the territory of the Slovene state (member state of the former Yugoslavia). Persons and organizations of the two nations were often in close working relationship.
The Regional archives Maribor – Pokrajinski arhiv Maribor (PAM) is a significant archive of the region. The aim of our research is to reveal those documents, correspondences, manuscripts and prints in the PAM documenting Hungarian-Slovene cultural, literary and scientific relations that have been so far practically unknown.
During the research we intend to work up the complete fonds of the PAM's stacks in Maribor. Our research also covers the archival collections of the branches of the Ljubljana Historical Archive (Zgodovinski arhiv Ljubljana - ZAL) and the Manuscript Library of the National and University Library of Ljubljana (Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica - NUK), exploring the sometimes sporadic Hungarian material found in them, focusing primarily on the period from the last de-cades of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century.
The result of the research will be an annotated repertorium with introduction in three languages – English, Hungarian and Slovene - that will be spread in Slovene, Hungarian and other foreign scientific institutions and will be also available for the broader public. The publication will be useful for experts researching Hungarian-Slovene historic contacts, the history, literary history and cultural history of the region from the 19th to the end of 20th century on the one hand and could reveal new, so far unknown but important materials in connection with the 19th and 20th centuries not only in Hungarian-Slovene relations but also for the Muravidék/Prekmurje (Mura Region) in history, cultural history and literary history.
